Holmes and Watson turn to the deep roots of Italian History to uncover the Mystery in one of the New Sherlock Holmes 10 Minute Play Series “Darkness Upon Us.”
Holmes along with long time associate Doctor Watson uncover an unsettling plot that goes beyond borders in their third story of book one in the 10 Minute Plays series titles Sherlock Holmes and the Darkness Upon Us. The plays, nine in all are designed to create an evening of mystery and intrigue as the action unfolds right in front of the audience. In this case, the story covers some actual events in history of King Umberto I of Italy and his rise to power. The king was deeply disliked in far-left circles, especially among anarchists, because of his conservatism and support of a massacre in Milan. After several attempts Umberto was assassinated in 1900.
The story leads up to this event and is covered in part in Darkness Upon Us, just one of the 10 Minute Plays in the series. Umberto had a military career in the Sardinian army and took part in the Italian Wars of Independence. In foreign policy Umberto approved the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Germany however, many in Italy viewed this alliance their former enemies, who were still occupying areas claimed by Italy. The reign of King Umberto I was at a time of social upheaval as Holmes and Watson connect the pieces into the unusual murder mystery at a popular pub in England.
